Anyone been to the Body Worlds exhibit at Science World? http://www.talkvancouver.ca/discussion/101/anyone-been-to-the-body-worlds-exhibit-at-science-world Wed, 17 Nov 2010 11:57:52 -0500 _lilith 101@/discussions I was invited to go with my friend and her small kids and was surprised to hear that her husband objects to her taking her children because he feels it's disrespectful of the dead (the exhibit is made up of human specimens). From his perspective, the only way he'd consider going is if they insisted on a respectful, funeral-home type atmosphere and if he had the assurance that all of the people who are now on display had given their permission to be used in this way. Apparently the specimens were obtained in China and he figures no one bothered asking for the consent of the dying or their families.

I'm inclined to think that as the exhibit is designed for educational purposes and viewers end up marvelling at the human body, the intent is respectful and I don't have a problem with it.

If you can show a potential employer your past accomplishments they will have confidence in hiring you over someone else.

This is what really career driven people do. They get hired, build up a bunch of accomplishments and credentials, then move on to the next job and do the same thing. Rinse and repeat. Within 10 years you can have a nice steady job that you can call a career, even without a university education.]]>
Gordon Campbell steps down as Premier http://www.talkvancouver.ca/discussion/93/gordon-campbell-steps-down-as-premier Fri, 05 Nov 2010 02:30:33 -0400 Simon 93@/discussions Premier Gordon Campbell held a press conference yesterday where he announced that will be stepping down as leader of the BC Liberals. Needless to say, this was a very unexpected move, which even the NDP wasn't expecting. While speculation is running rampant as to why Campbell chose this moment to step aside, its obvious that the backlash from the introduction of the HST played a large factor in his abysmal 9% approval rating. Public criticism over the past year or two has been focused squarely on Campbell's shoulders, which he indicated as a reason for his departure: “When public debate becomes focused on one person, instead of what is in the best interest of British Columbians, we have lost sight about what is important,” Mr. Campbell told a news conference in Vancouver. “When that happens, it's time for a change.”

HST issues aside, I think you have to give Campbell credit for being good at what he does. He started out as a developer in Vancouver in the 1980s and later won a seat as Mayor of the city. He later was part of the opposition for several NDP premiers (including Mike Harcourt and Glen Clark) and then finally became Premier. As Premier, he was in power for 3 consecutive terms showing that he had the confidence of the Province as well as his own party. Personally, I think that BC has done well economically relative to the rest of the North American (and Global) economy. We haven't felt nearly the negative effects that other provinces and states have since the recession hit in 2008. The housing industry is robust and growing, tourism is booming, there are several new university's that have been built, Skytrain has been expanded, and several new roads and bridges that were desperately needed. Plus they were able to cut the income tax significantly, which I personally am very glad about. Campbell is leaving his party with an internal approval rating of 84% and in my opinion, an economically stronger and more prosperous province.

At the end of the day, this is just a normal part of a game known as Provincial Politics, is it not? No one is perfect, not Gordon Campbell or any of his predecessors for that matter. Can you really say that Carole James cares that much more about BC than she does about simply being in a position of power? I doubt it. There was a time when Glen Clark was premier of BC, and people made such a big deal about the Fast Ferry's that he had to step aside, and he was NDP so it doesn't make all that much of a difference. At the end of the day, you can't make everyone happy no matter how hard you try!

At the end of the day, the real question is who will be the next Premier of BC? And for how long... Share your opinions below, I'm very curious to hear what you guys think!]]>
Carole James raises a fuss about the minimum wage http://www.talkvancouver.ca/discussion/90/carole-james-raises-a-fuss-about-the-minimum-wage Mon, 01 Nov 2010 19:16:58 -0400 Simon 90@/discussions
Leave it to the NDP to blow an election that's already been won for them. Gordon Campbell decides to lower the income tax by 15% to mitigate the negative effects of the HST (both real and perceived) and Carole James responds by... complaining about the minimum wage. Seriously, is that the best the NDP could come up with? Here is an excerpt from Carole James statment:
The last time BC's minimum wage workers got a raise was on Nov. 1, 2001.Nine years have passed by since then. Every other province has raised its minimum wage except for BC. Today BC has the lowest minimum wage in the entire country and workers who've fallen further and further behind. People of BC tell me they just don't trust this government to act on their priorities. But they can count on New Democrats to boost BC's minimum wage as one of our first acts in government.

I mean, I agree with the fact that minimum wage should be higher, but at the same time it isn't something that's crucial to the economy. It also isn't something that will impact a lot of people that work in BC. Here's my logic... the minimum wage is a "starting point" for when you are new to your career or to a specific field (assuming you have no marketable skills). As a foundation of your career, your job as a worker is to work hard, earn raises, and play the game to get ahead. That's simply how life works. If someone is still making $8/hour after 9 years at the same job, they are definitely doing something wrong. Either they need to quit and find a new employer or they should accept the fact that they haven't done anything to deserve a raise. In fact, very few people I know actually make $8 at this point in their lives. I mean, I started at minimum wage (back then it was $6) but I've slowly increased since then by working hard, proving my value, and increasing my skill set.

“New Democrats believe that hard work should be rewarded. It’s a core value that we all share as British Columbians and as Canadians. It’s critical for a strong society and economy.

It's unreasonable to say that hard work should be rewarded when you are proposing a universal increase in minimum wage that isn't based on how hard you work, but rather what phase of your career you are in. If I was a lazy person who was happy making $8 an hour, I'd be overjoyed that the government was rewarding me for wanting to stay at the bottom of the ladder. It's not fair to say that not raising the minimum wage is not rewarding hard work. I know immigrants who don't even start at $8 when they are new to the country, because they actually bring some skills to the table or prove their value in other ways.

Anyways, the Liberals have done so much damage to their credibility over the last few years (Campbell's 9% approval rating is the lowest ever) that the NDP should be a shoe-in in the next election. But, there is still lots of time for the Liberals to make up lost ground, especially with Carole James doing such a miserable job as leader of the NDP. What if the Liberals did decide to increase the minimum wage before the next election?

Premier Gordon Campbell announces a 15% income tax cut http://www.talkvancouver.ca/discussion/83/premier-gordon-campbell-announces-a-15-income-tax-cut Fri, 29 Oct 2010 17:41:50 -0400 Simon 83@/discussions
I'm not a big fan of the Liberals, but they deserve credit for keeping our economy strong while the rest of the world has been struggling to stay afloat. In fact, the Fraser Institute recently named Gordon Campbell the best fiscal manager in Canada and I think you can see the evidence all around you. There are major bridges being built, roads being widened all over the lower mainland, and homes being built to accommodate the increasing population. Surrey is even getting a new critical care center which will increase capacity at their main hospital. These things wouldn't be possible unless we had good leadership from the provincial Liberals, but some people will never be happy.

Here is the live video from Campbell's provincial address last Wednesday.

What theeee.. per trip??? what the hell.. seriously? isn't there like only two way to get to langley? So if you were to use this to get home and back from work you'd be paying.. $6 a day for 5 days *52 weeks in a year = $1560/year to cross the bridge.. what theee... i know you don't get something for nothing but damn. Just feels like a hard pill to swallow.
